To assist people in reaching their divine potential and living life to the full, we hold to what we call the W.I.S.E. philosophy of ministry. These beliefs are derived from the Great Commandment and Great Commission and are displayed in the early church from the book of Acts.
The Covington Assembly of God family is called and committed to:
Worship:
- "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind." (Matthew 22:37)
- We believe that the key to an abundant life journey begins with a relationship with God through His one and only Son, Jesus Christ. Therefore, above all things, we desire to love and worship the God who loves us and who gives us life.
Integrate:
- "Love your neighbor as yourself." (Matthew 22:39)
- We believe that people are the crown of God's creation. God's love for people is so great that, in spite of mankind's sins, He gave His only begotten Son to save us. God expects His followers to share the same love with all people and to live in harmony.
Shape:
- "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:19-20)
- We believe that God's purpose for all His children is to live according to His Word. We are not only committed to a lifetime of learning God's Word but are also committed to a life that functions according to His Word.
Evangelize:
- "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." (Mark 16:15-16)
- We believe that we are in possession of something that is of infinitely greater value than even the cure for cancer. We possess the Good News that everlasting life is available to everyone who receives Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We must not be guilty of holding such information to ourselves.
All of these beliefs are derived from the teachings of Jesus and are evident in the early church. A quick glance at Acts 2:42-47 reveals that each of these beliefs were values of the New Testament church and should be the values for the church of today.
Two years after the founding of the Assemblies of God, members adopted 16 beliefs for the Fellowship. This list, known as the Statement of Fundamental Truths, remains virtually unchanged. Four of these beliefs are considered the major tenets of the Fellowship. They are:
1. Salvation Through Jesus Christ (John 3:3, 16, 17; Romans 10:13; Ephesians 2:8, 9)
Salvation is received through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, being justified by grace through faith, man becomes an heir of God, according to the hope of eternal life.
2. Baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8; 2:4; 17, 18, 38, 39)
All believers are entitled to and should ardently expect and earnestly seek the promise of the Father, the baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church. With it comes the enduement of power for life and service, the bestowment of the gifts and their uses in the work of the ministry.
3. Divine Healing for the Sick (James 5:14-16)
Divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement, and is the privilege of all believers.
4. The Second Coming of Christ (1 Thessalonians 4:14-16; 1 Corinthians 15:51, 52)
The second coming of Christ includes the rapture of the saints, which is our blessed hope, followed by the visible return of Christ with His saints to reign on earth for one thousand years.
